Summer calls for drinks, drinks, and more drinks! Even though most of those refreshing little treats likely have some sort of alcohol in them, it’s never a bad thing to mix in a water here and there, haha! But after all those yummy summer patio drinks water can seem so boring… not anymore! How genius are these Peak ice cube trays I found while perusing the Bella Chic website?! The long rectangular shape of them allows them to fit perfectly in your water bottle. I LOVE my S’well bottles but the size of the opening is annoying as it is slightly too small to fit standard size ice cubes, seriously?!! These rectangular shaped ice cubes quickly solve that problem!

Of course, I took the opportunity to get a little creative and added some fruit to mine. This is a perfect way to use up any fruit that may be on the verge of being too ripe! Add them to your drink in the morning and as they melt throughout the day they add mega flavour to your water. Having people over? Some sparkling water and one of these in a fancy glass makes you look like a hosting goddess!

I usually make a bunch and then keep them in a ziploc in my freezer so they’re ready to go whenever I need them!

Here are some of my favourite combinations:

-raspberry & lemon
-blackberry & mint
-watermelon & jalapeno (remove seeds)
-lime & nectarine
-watermelon & basil
-raspberry & nectarine
-pineapple & raspberry

Get creative!

To be honest I planned on sharing this post before I left for Maui but I simply ran out of time… between getting ready for Dawna’s wedding, making a 4 day sub plan, and packing, time was of the essence and I failed miserably at getting this post out. But, desperate to find the positive I realized that this is actually better as I can now tell you, 5 days into my trip, what I actually used not what I thought I might need.

First things first. The bag… this Stella and Dot Riviera Tote is actually the most perfect beach bag EVER. The size is perfect for me. I don’t have kids yet so I don’t need anything too big but I do need something that holds all my necessities. I love that this has a beach vibe but is a little on the dressy side so it can be transitioned to night. The tassel can fold over a holds the bag closed with a magnet or, if your bag is super full, it can just hang out for looks. Oh and it just so happens to be on sale, bonus!

So, now without further adieu, in no particular order, here is what’s in my beach bag!

1. )Sunglasses- Duh… I feel like this is the most obvious thing ever especially when it Maui! The sun never stops shining so protecting those eyes and looking cute is a must and is made easy with these stunning Prada sunnies I scooped from Spareparts before leaving!

2.) S’well water bottle- a beach day must. If you don’t know what a s’well water bottle is head to their website and see what the buzz is all about. Trust me, the price tag is totally worth it.

3.) Sudio Wireless headphones– perfect for roasting on the beach! Wireless headphones are a must when sitting on the beach. Keep your phone cool in your bag while you get your jam on!

4.) Sun hat- I forgot mine and went three days without one, it was the worst! Not only does it look cute, and allows you to extend that hair a few more days, it is also SO important to keep the sun off your face!!

5.) SPF chapstick – Is there anything worse than getting a sunburn on your lips? Nope. This glo. minerals cherry balm protects lips with full spectrum SPF 15 while nurturing botanicals of hemp seed oil, meadowfoam and mango seed butter soothe and heal… awesome. It has been a trip favourite for all of the ladies, and some boys

6.) A good book- for obvious reasons you need a book. Reading is something I LOVE to do but with my busy lifestyle it doesn’t always happen. Beach days are my favourite days to get lost in a good read. Together is Better by Simon Sinek was light hearted, inspiration, and exactly what I needed.

7.) Bose Mini Soundlink – When travelling in a group like we did, this is a real game changer. Throw it in your beach bag and it will keep the gang happy and entertained for hours! Just don’t forget to download a playlist before you leave…

8.) Sunscreen- Although this is the last on this list it is always the first thing I put into my bag. Before leaving for Maui I stopped in at Nu Image for some sunscreen recommendations. Jenn set me up with two, the Vivier Sunscreen SPF 30 (this is the same brand my skin regime is- it’s amazing), and the ZO Skin Health Sun Spray 50, this stuff is AMAZING! I have to say I like the ZO stuff better for the simple fact that it is a spray- it is so convenient, easy, and is NOT greasy! I highly recommend this product!

There ya have it! K off to the beach to roast for one more day….

Will I ever start to enjoy running?! This is the question I keep asking myself. If I’m going to be honest, at this point I am really not enjoying this whole training for a half marathon thing. Truthfully, it started out quite well. I was running a quick 5-6 km every day after work. The temperatures were mild and the playlists were good. A few weeks, sore foot, old playlist, and side stich later, I’m starting to realize that running ain’t just rainbows and butterflies… those runners out there *slow clap* I applaud you.

With that being said, there are a few things I’ve learnt along the way and I thought I would share them with you.

1.) Duh, this is an obvious one but I did it so perhaps there are others who have made this mistake too. Don’t run in old runners! I went to buy new running shoes but they didn’t have the color I wanted (seriously, Holl?) so I waited it out and ran in my old sneakers until the pink pair came in. Waiting for that perfect color sneaker to arrive is what started the demise of my training. I was running in shoes that were easily 4 years old and began to get intense pain in my arches, not only when I ran but any time I was barefoot or wearing a shoe that didn’t have the proper arch support. After googling and consulting other running experts, I was told to take a few weeks off, roll it with a tennis ball, and let it heal completely before heading out again in NEW runners.

2.) It’s about function not fashion. This ties into the point above. Do not buy runners based on their looks. If you follow me on a regular basis you know I am a sucker for a great pair of sneakers. Keep your casual sneakers and running shoes separate. Buy running or workout shoes from the specialists. If you’re local to Regina, I suggest Track and Trail. They will be able to analyze the way you walk and fit you with a pair of shoes that are right for you. They may not look the greatest but trust me your feet will be so happy

3.) Find a good playlist BEFORE you head out. This is a mistake I have made one too many times. There is nothing worse than having to skip every other song. If you’re on Spotify, here are a few that I have been loving lately! Hip Hop, pop, and a mix of everything! You could also create your own playlist of all your favourites, I haven’t done this yet but I feel like it would be awesome!

4.) Use a running app. I prefer the Nike+. It tracks your distance, time, and you can add friends. I also love that it tracks your total distance, it just makes me feel so good! You can also make notes about how the run went. If used properly I assume this could help you problem solve.

5.) Get a running buddy! My sister is mine and even though we live in different cities she holds me accountable sending me “have you run yet?!” snaps, texts, or calls! We are also running the Seawheeze together so having a mutual end goal is a major bonus!

NOW, here is where I need your help! Out of nowhere I have been experiencing a major stitch on my right side, right below my rib. It is seriously SOOO annoying, and SOOO painful!!! I have done some research and some say it’s my breathing and others say it could be a tight muscle. I haven’t noticed a change in my breathing so I’m thinking that’s not it. Any suggestions?! Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

The run is basically a month away now and so it’s go time. Although I’m not a huge fan of running, I’m not a quitter! So, any other suggestions and tips for making this last month of training the best it can be would be awesome!
