If you have been following my blog and Instagram page for a while you will know that I have always had long, colour treated hair, ombre to be exact. I love grown out, lived in blonde highlights for a few reasons but most importantly, they’re super low maintenance! I’m going to share a little secret… I really don’t enjoy getting my hair done. Now, this is not because I don’t like my hairstylist and the end result. I really do love my stylist, in fact, she happens to be my soon-to-be sister-in-law! Marlo and I get along great, I love visiting with her but I much prefer to do so over a nice dinner with a glass of wine. Because my hair is so long and quite thick it takes hours, and I get antsy sitting in the chair! It also doesn’t help that I feel like I have a million other things I could be doing. Anyways, like I said, I do love the end result so it’s important I keep my hair healthy and strong.

The last time I went to get my hair done we decided to make my ombre more drastic and go really blonde at the ends. Summer is coming (hopefully) and I always tend to go a bit lighter around this time of year. With lighter hair comes some different maintenance. Here are my top 3 tips for keeping your colour treated hair looking fresh and most importantly, healthy!

1. Dove Strengthening Hair Mask – this hair mask is amazing for strengthening damaged hair which is what happens when I lighten my ends. The second I add blonde I notice breakage… it sucks, but it’s the cost of having the colour I want! To combat this I use the Dove Strengthening Hair Mask after every second wash. It’s formulated with white clay and is inspired by skin care ingredients which I LOVE. The formula is also infused with minerals to moisturize every strand and leave it looking as healthy as it feels. I wash my hair only once a week, so I use this mask once every two weeks! I simply apply to the middle of the shaft and take it down to the ends, let it sit for 3-5 minutes, and then rinse! Make sure to only focus on the middle and ends of your hair! This mask is a MUST if you have damaged hair!

2. Regular micro trims. I have not always been the best at this. I would sometimes go a full year without getting my ends trimmed… not good. Your hair splits and then just breaks off. So, if you are like me and you never want to cut your hair because you are trying to grow it out, just tell your stylist you want a micro trim- this will get rid of the dead ends but you really won’t notice losing a lot of length!

3. Minimal hot tools usage. This one can be tricky if you wash your hair often, but I only wash my hair once a week, therefore the most I will use hot tools on my hair per week is once! If you wash your hair more than that, I would try to air dry every second wash just to reduce the amount of heat you’re using on your hair!

If you haven’t tried the Dove Strengthening Hair mask yet, give it a try and let me know what you think!!

I hope you find these tips and tricks helpful!

Here is a more in depth tutorial from a few years ago. My current routine is pretty much the same minus a few different products!

And if you’re not interested in watching or listening to me talk (I totally get it lol) here are the step by step instructions:

Step 1:
Wash & Condition with Ouai Shampoo and Conditioner. If your hair is SUPER dry and you want to take the time to do a mask, I highly recommend EVO The Great Hydrator Moisture. It is hands down my favourite. I have repurchased this product many times! It is on the pricy side but you honestly don’t need a lot so it lasts.

Step 2:

Comb out your locks and apply drybar Southern Belle Volumizing Mouse starting at the roots then bringing the extra down to the ends. Next add Aveda Phomollient starting at the ends. You don’t need this at the roots. If you are only going to use one… choose this!! It is SO important, it is what holds the curls.

Step 3:

Wander around your house aimlessly until your hair is like 25% ish dry. Make yourself a coffee or better yet grab yourself a wine… the next step is annoying.

Step 4:

Round brush blow dry your hair. This is tricky to explain that’s why I videoed it. But basically section your hair into small sections, apply the round brush to your scalp, and then dry it for a few seconds, then pull it down…. again, very hard to explain, perhaps fast forward to this section of the video. *Important, blow dry the front top section forward!! It makes such a difference!

Step 5:

Section your hair off the same way you did before. Then take your wand and curl the hair away from your face! *Hack- curl the bottom ones in bigger sections to save time!

Step 6:

Once you’re done curling (if you have time) give your hair a few minutes to set. This will help them last longer! Brush through with your fingers or a brush whichever you choose. Spray with Living Proof Perfect Hair Days body builder. I love this product because it is adds volume (I can never get enough!) and it isn’t sticky- I can still run my fingers through my hair which is super important to me… you would know this if you watch my stories lol!

Other FAQ:

What do you do with your hair at night to make the curls last?
Nothing! I never have had to do anything… they just last. I know some people sleep with it in a braid or top knot but I don’t.

Who does your hair?
I have gone to a few hairstylists over the last few years but most recently I went to Nadine at Saffyre Salon. I would highly recommend her, she is great!

How often do you get your hair done?
Hmmm… maybe once a year. Confession, nothing against Nadine or any hairstylists, but I really don’t like getting my hair done. I have A LOT of hair so it takes hours and I am so impatient, lol!

Do you have extensions?
Nope! I have had many offers from brand/ stylists to get them but I am just really not interested. I love my natural hair. I am a low maintenance kind of gal so extensions of any kind don’t really interest me. If I was going to do any, I would do clip ins just to add to a braid or something!

How often do you wash your hair?
Is it bad if I say once a week… lol! Bur for real, usually once or twice! It takes some time and you have to train your hair but once you do your hair produces less oils therefore you need to wash less!

What’s your favourite kind of dry shampoo?
This is a tough one… my all time favourite is still EVO Water Killer but if I’m on a budget I will get the Big Sexy Hair Push Up! They are both great!

What’s your favourite scrunchie line?
I have tried many over the years and they are all very cute. But I must say Charleigh Wren (YQR local, whoop whoop!) & Chelsea King are my two favourites. They are adorable but more importantly they aren’t too tight. I have super thick hair so if the elastic is too tight it is super uncomfortable to wrap around twice.

What colour does your hairstylist use?
I legit have no clue! Also, I feel like it’s not necessarily the colour its the skill of your hairstylist!

Well, there you have it! I think I have answered every possible question I can!! But, if I’ve missed something please leave it in the comment section below and I will make sure to add it to this post!

I have been meaning to write this post for weeks now. Winter hair is the worst hair. It’s dry, brittle, straw-like and staticy… ugh, staticy hair is just the absolute worst!!!

Lucky for you, I have done the grunt work. I’ve tried dozens of products and I’ve selected only my favourites (the ones I’ve bought, used, and rebought, several times) to share with you! There is one key element to having winter hair and that is dryness. All the winter hair traits described above are mainly caused by dryness. In order to combat these traits, you need to restore the moisture back into your hair.

3 Products You Need To Kick Winter Hair’s Butt

1.) EVO – The Great Hydrator this product is like a patient friend, gently combing out the knots in your hair while another friend lays petals upon the ground to soften your walk to the morning bus. Those are the exact words taken from the front of the bottle and every one is true. I’ve talked about this hair mask before. It’s my ride or die and I seriously would NOT survive winter without it.

2.) Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil– First, this oil, well anything from the Oribe line actually, smells AMAZEBALLS. I have the candle and it gives me LIFE!!! Shout out to Sara Lindsay Makeup Studio for the candle. If you’re local to Regina, she carries the entire Oribe line where you can purchase in person and save on shipping. This oil does exactly what every oil should do that never seems to. It moisturizes without weighing your hair down. I put this on my hair when it’s damp before I blow dry and then again when I’m done styling my hair. Keep it away from the roots- it does add some shine which can make your hair look oily if you take it to the root. The only downfall is the price… it is quite expensive but trust me it’s worth it, and it lasts forever!!

3.) EVO- Hot Tool Shaper you like power tools; you like getting creative and exercising your machine reflex upon your head; but alas, your late night bbqing sessions are causing the ends to fray; the answer could be simple- a little lack of lubricant. Another direct quote from the bottle, lol. These product descriptions just crack me up but they’re so true! Protecting your hair when using hot tools is key. Damage hair = a brittle, dry, straw like mess. Not cute! Protect those locks, love!
