If you have been following my blog and Instagram page for a while you will know that I have always had long, colour treated hair, ombre to be exact. I love grown out, lived in blonde highlights for a few reasons but most importantly, they’re super low maintenance! I’m going to share a little secret… I really don’t enjoy getting my hair done. Now, this is not because I don’t like my hairstylist and the end result. I really do love my stylist, in fact, she happens to be my soon-to-be sister-in-law! Marlo and I get along great, I love visiting with her but I much prefer to do so over a nice dinner with a glass of wine. Because my hair is so long and quite thick it takes hours, and I get antsy sitting in the chair! It also doesn’t help that I feel like I have a million other things I could be doing. Anyways, like I said, I do love the end result so it’s important I keep my hair healthy and strong.

The last time I went to get my hair done we decided to make my ombre more drastic and go really blonde at the ends. Summer is coming (hopefully) and I always tend to go a bit lighter around this time of year. With lighter hair comes some different maintenance. Here are my top 3 tips for keeping your colour treated hair looking fresh and most importantly, healthy!

1. Dove Strengthening Hair Mask – this hair mask is amazing for strengthening damaged hair which is what happens when I lighten my ends. The second I add blonde I notice breakage… it sucks, but it’s the cost of having the colour I want! To combat this I use the Dove Strengthening Hair Mask after every second wash. It’s formulated with white clay and is inspired by skin care ingredients which I LOVE. The formula is also infused with minerals to moisturize every strand and leave it looking as healthy as it feels. I wash my hair only once a week, so I use this mask once every two weeks! I simply apply to the middle of the shaft and take it down to the ends, let it sit for 3-5 minutes, and then rinse! Make sure to only focus on the middle and ends of your hair! This mask is a MUST if you have damaged hair!

2. Regular micro trims. I have not always been the best at this. I would sometimes go a full year without getting my ends trimmed… not good. Your hair splits and then just breaks off. So, if you are like me and you never want to cut your hair because you are trying to grow it out, just tell your stylist you want a micro trim- this will get rid of the dead ends but you really won’t notice losing a lot of length!

3. Minimal hot tools usage. This one can be tricky if you wash your hair often, but I only wash my hair once a week, therefore the most I will use hot tools on my hair per week is once! If you wash your hair more than that, I would try to air dry every second wash just to reduce the amount of heat you’re using on your hair!

If you haven’t tried the Dove Strengthening Hair mask yet, give it a try and let me know what you think!!

I hope you find these tips and tricks helpful!
